I've got a 95 Mustang GT c/w 5.0L that is hard to start. It is especialy hard to start after it has gotten to normal operating temperature, and has been shut off for 10-15 minutes. It cranks for an extended period before it will start. When it does fire it idles rough as if it is flooded. I have changed plugs, cap and rotor. It has a new fuel and air filter. What is wrong? could it be a leaking injector, or faulty ignition coil? I hope somebody has some ideas for me. Thanks in advance.

I remember reading something to that effect in a chevy. It was some sort of vapor lock in the fuel system. Sorry I can't recall more, but the symptoms were very, very similar. Good place to start though.

You should check the computer for codes. It may have something for you even without it lighting the check engin light. The codes could tell you if it is something like a stuck EGR valve. The other thing I would suggest is taking it into a shop that has all the diagnostic equipment and get them to tell you what it is and then fix it yourself.

Check fuel pressure at idle. 30-40 psi is normal. Now leave this guage on and shut off the engine. Monitor the gauge for any pressure loss. You should see no pressure decrease with the engine off. If it does bleed down this will give you your long crank time. Replace the fuel pump if this is what you see....

That's what mine started doing right before the Ignition control Module crapped out.

Any resolution to this problem?

Please keep us posted. The biggest problem I see with the tech sections is that people get their problems fixed and none of the rest of us know what the fix was.

I have a E350 that in my opinion takes to long to start and would love to here what you find!

Any answers or new questions?

I am having the exact same problem with my heep (4.0L EFI) right now. You described whats happening to a tee. Let me know if you find out whats wrong. I also have changed my filters, checked the fuel lines, grounds ect ect. Nothing has helped. Starts fine if it is cold but once it is running temp then good luck. Was about to change the fuel pump next but I don't think that is it either. It seems to be getting fuel just fine. You guys suggest getting it read for error codes. Where can one do that so that its not going to cost an arm and a leg and be jerked around by some fawker.

If I find something out I'll post it

depends on the year etc, for reading codes. If it's a newer model and the check engine light isn't ont hen there won't be any and a more in depth inpection will be required. Codes are usually read for $39.95 here at Crowfoot Ford.

So does 94' fall into the "newer model" catagory. Check engine light is not on btw

The 94 is an EECIV model, so it's the older style, codes can be read but without the engine light being on, you probably won't get any useful codes. will need a diagnostic check. I believe crappy tire or any aftermarket shop with an analizer may be the easisiest to use for this. just go in and say you want the diagnostic run and you want the printout. You tell them you don't want it repaired. You can then take the results and fix it yourself.

Thanks again for the advice. The heep is now back on the road!! In the end I changed the spark plugs, distributor, rotor, ignition wires, and the fuel filter and she is fireing right up. I believe it was maybe a combo of everything cuz nothing really seemed that bad but then nothing was that good either. Swaping everything out was probably a good idea anyway.
