My buddy wants me to replace a u-joint in the front axle of his late 90's Ram 1/2 ton 4x4. I've replaced lots of U-joints on my Cherokee so replacing the u-joint itself wont be a problem, but I'm wondering how the actual axle is set up and how hard the axle shafts are to remove. I'm hoping it's a similar setup to my Cherokee, but have never looked closely at it before.

Any info or hints would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone know the size of the large axleshaft retaining nut?

Thanks.

Loc: Alberta either Calgary or Wain...
It is not too hard other than you will need a 12 point impact socket for the 3 nuts that hold the hub assembly on. (MUST HAVE 12 POINT). You will also need a 1 (3/4) socket to get the nut of the axle shaft. A good pry bar and some nut breaker as the 1 (3/4)" nut is normally rusted solid. You might need a new cotter pin too.

Just a note CHECK FOR TIRE PLAY BEFORE UNBOLTING the u-joint play is a good sign in many cases that the hub assembly is worn out.

- First take the tire off then remove the caliper and rotor.
- remove the cotter pin and the crown nut
- remove the 3 bolts in the rear holding the hub on (it will take some force and a pry bar to get the hub off
- once the hub is off then slide the axle out carefully to make sure that you don't damage the seals

Replace joint and then reverse the procedure to put it all back in. With the Dodges they have a CAD (central axle disconnect) on the passenger side be careful when you slide the axle back in that it lines up right so that you don't have to take it all apart again.
