not good, my suggestion would be to find a zf-5speed at the junk yard and swap that in. it is a much stronger trans, same bellhousing pattern, so it should swap right in, just check driveshaft lenghts, t/case intermediate adapter. let me know how it goes and or what route you decide. i work at a ford dealership as a mechanic. maybe i can help in the info dep.
i do a little on 7.3l to alot on man trans, hope the swap works out for your buddy stay in touch.
