Hey Mike

Was wondering how ya was, hadn't heard from ya in a while. Those shift forks have a hard time moving everything (fork and collar) while the diff fluid is cold and thick, which is why you have that problem when it's cold. Like trying to move a spoon through frozen syrup

Even if there's a slight leak in the vacumm (pinhole) makes moving through that cold thick syrup even worse and is almost impossible. A lot of times where you'll find a vacumm leak is just under the battery, caused by the corrosive effect of the battery falling from the top and hardening & possibly cracking the vacumm lines. If you drive around for a while and warm the fluid up, just the splines, collar, side gears, etc. turning will help do this, as long as it's not too cold, you should be able to shift the front. I don't work on Friday, so if you want I could try and help ya problem solve the system if you haven't got it fixed yet
