New Rental From Hertz

I just got off the phone with Hertz. Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but they have a yellow H2 for rent. I've booked it, but just wanted to let everyone know. (I don't work for Hertz...i just spotted it on the way into work this weekend.)
$175/day plus $0.25/km.... Optional insurance was $40/day with a .....gulp.....$5000 deductible.....
On the same note, where were the Rubicon TJ's being rented from???

At the car show, one of the GM reps (specifically the H2 rep) said "For the price, you'd be better off to buy a Yukon if you want a big SUV. If you want an offroad vehicle, save up for a real hummer, the H2 will give you a back ache after 30 minutes of driving, and it will do terrible off road" I then asked him if he actually gets paid for "bashing" the H2... He then noted that he was also the H1 rep, and was encouraging sales on a much higher end vehicle, and a more useful one too.
Oh, did anyone see that VW "flex display" I'm sorry, that was just a very funny setup, the guy there said they had to jack the right side up to get the "flex ramps" under the tires... I'm lovin it already!

I find the H2 to be a glorified Cherokee( no offence to Cherokee owners- I can just feel the smack coming from Mikey ) There's nothing like the H1.

Now come on Knight, do you really think the H2 would do that well..
After all, a jeep has to have something going for it.. The H2 has...?? a nice plastic bumper..?? Aahhhh.. Quiet interoir with luxury ride.. ??
Ya, try as I might, I can't seem to find the $60000 worth of vehicle either..

The H2 doesn't give a luxury ride, it's about as smooth as a TJ, but that's just me. And no offense to a TJ, but, that's rough compared to a Lincoln Navigator or Caddy Escalade... And like I said, the seats supposedly make your back hurt...

for the price of an H2, I'd get a military hummer converted to civvie (civillian interior, and change to wagon or soft or hard top 4dr if you want), slantbacks are only $48,000 after conversion and hard top, soft and wagon are $58,000, $55,000 and $65,000 respectively I believe!

Why?
Why not just buy a Hummer, rather than spend all the effort converting a Mil spec truck?

Real hummer is $168,000, Mil Spec hummer is $68,000... See the difference? And you don't converted, you buy it like that.

With, errr, like 4" of clearance? I don't think so.
Oh, and with that MASSIVE 5" space to flex above the tires? Heck, even my jeep is better than that!

mil spec truck is not dot approved, therefore you can not register or insure it to drive on the street without the proper mods and inspection legally.

The only thing that would be needed for a MIL SPEC truck here in Alberta is to have a non-direction tread pattern tire. But most of the michelins are now non-directional and therefore legal in Alberta. I have many friends that have Military vehicles and they are insured and driven with no mods other than a more comfy seat...

I was going to say, if a mil spec truck isn't DOT approved, how the heck are there all kinds of dueces and a halfs around alberta, and I've seen converted Army Hummers driving around.

Hmmm... a used 1992 or early 1993 Hummer, which is as close as you can get to the A2 designation M998 goes for about 30k to 35k Canadian depending on condition.
So if you goal is to get a A1 or even a M998 level HMMWV and "convert" it to a cilvilian style truck (12v electrics etc), why not just buy a used 92-94 Hummer?

In reply to:
Is the H2 suspension not just a modified version of a Chev 3/4-ton???
It's a five link with either coils or airbags (two suspension choices). I don't remember many 3/4 ton chevy's with 5 link coil rears. It uses a 9.5" AAM 14 bolt with electrical locker.

To export a HMMWV from the US you need clear title (Form 97)
Once it's here, It would have to be inspected and then you'd be driving it.

Spoken like a true used car salesman Actually.......not a bad idea. Wolfy you should look into selling these babys. I think I'd buy a HMMWV for 30,000, anyone want to buy an Avalanche?

Wolf Thank you I wanted to say something to that effect but you see I dont own a Hummer nor do I think i ever will so in essance i would be talking out my ass saying the same thing you did , However i did drive one a few times while the rotary club was raffling one off , they are not near as expensive as people think they are, ...... anyway I am the only one here that realizes that the DOT does not exist here in Canada the Department Of Transport is an American agency ...the Ministry Of Transport or MOT is the Canadian version and has slightly ...ok a whole bunch of differant rules ... and what Facerape said is correct ...to a point.... Boggers are directional Tires ... so are Claws....... more to the point ....Army car tires of many years ago were not MOT/DOT approved ... that is why you seen alot of 18 wheelers packing Army Cars to where they to go .... nowadays you dont see that ...because the tire suppliers got the Military spec tires MOT/DOT approved and now they can drive them on the streets and hwys. anyway for Mil spec Vehicles i see them all the time on the roads of Calgary .... hey Wolf ...wasnt the X-file unit turned into Military spec when you got hold of it?

The X-files Hummer was a Early 1993 Red Two Door HMC2 that had the top taken off, new "b" and "c" piller added, as well as Mil soft top and doors. It was a 6.2 Diesel, TH400/242 Tcase. This corresponds fairly closely to a M998A1 (242 tcase being one of the changes from the M998, which had a 218). It still had the batteries under the passenger seat, and rear bulkheads behind the seats for mid point protection. this was removed in the later 93's and up so the seats could go back! It was and is a Civilian Truck. It was originally owned by Syncrude and was one of the first Hummes sold in Calgary by Great West. The truck was sold to a person in Edmonton who helped to dress it as a HMMWV for the show. It had 5 or 6 different tops and configurations it could be dressed with for different looks on the show. When I bought it, it has US Air Force badging and markings on it, as well as being Camo. It was then repainted 383 Green for another movie I rented it too. I sold it about a two years ago. It's still in Calgary. Here it is in 1998, with the original Air Force Markings. Note of course it has the civilian dash. This is it about a year or so later, after it had been painted 383 green

I sold the one above for $35,000 two years ago.
There was a 93 that sold a while ago for $30,000 in town. Look around and keep your eyes open. They are out there.

I've found some for $30,000 USD just south of alberta... What is with everyone and putting two 12,000# winches on their hummer, and suddenly, the value goes up $14,000 US? I've always liked the look of a hummer, and they're "luxury" in my opinion when it comes to offroaders... They're very manly, and I think I would find that they serve their "heavy duty" purpose quite well... That and they're a bit more secure than a soft top jeep is :P PS - On another note, I am kinda freaking about "secure", the window on my Fiero got smashed, and the windshield, and the door
