I have a 91 samurai (injected) that has suddenly lost compression in #1 cylinder. I know of a complete but rough shortbox toyota 4x4 with a rotten frame, but in running condition. The question is do I fix the stock 1.3 hamster or swap in the 20r, trans, transfer case, and diffs and some 33's for the ultimate suzuki?

how difficult was it? any gremlins to look out for? I like samurais but they are way underpowered and the stock 3.73 gearing sucks with 31's, so stock 4.10 yota axles are a better idea that re-gearing the stock units. and the 20r or 22r would make it 3 times as powerful, but still light weight.

I've looked at the 20/22r engines and they don't seem much bigger than the sammi motor. I was thinking 22r and toyota radiator and electric fan. I think it'll work. As far as running a 3.0 V6, we all know about the head gasket problems they have, and they are a lot heavier than a 4cyl. But the power must be awesome!!!

3.0L TOY ENGINES are crap, head gasket problems and no freaking power, just ask wailing bruce on here what he thinks about the 3.0l , he said it doesnt have enough power to get out of its own way, you can have more power and reliability with the 22r, but the 20r is still a very good engine.

They may not look much different in size, but it's what's inside that counts. 1.3 to 2.4........hmmmmm.
I would not go with the Toy 3.0L. The power difference is not a ton more, and plus the 22R engine rocks!!!
Just my 2 cents,
Tye

lets not get carried away with the 3L being crap!!! it has its problems and so do all engines ( timing chain guides on 22r). The 3L is a very smooth running and reving engine and the torque is massive over the 22r , and that is what we are looking for when trying to turn large tires.. as for wailers beast it was an auto with stock gears trying to turn 35" boggers..I don't think my tacoma would have enough jam to do that...... plus he had over 200 000 kms on the engine... just a few things to think about..

I like your setup, no doubt about it. The 3.0 is a good motor once the head gaskets have been done, not the fault of the engine, just a bad batch of gaskets from factory. It does weigh a lot more than a 4 cylinder. As far as the 22r, use the steel guides from the 20r and yer laughing.
BTW, I just pulled the valve cover off and found the #1 cylinder valves hung up, no clearance in rocker - adjusted all valves and will do compession test tomorrow and see if things are back to normal. (I kinda hope not...haha)

I think mabey you misunderstood me. I never said the 3L was crap, I don't come on this board and flame anyone (on purpose anyway HehHeh). Run what ya want, really makes no difference to me. Good luck and have fun!

chucker i am running the Yj springs with toy axles and it is a nice flexyyyy ride... I had to ad an extra leaf to the front pack when i put in the v-6 but you should be able to run stock yj leafs, ken has a ton of them for cheap.. good luck also you may want to consider the 1.6 side kick engine swap... nice and light motor with more power, and it can be easily adapted..

maybe it's something as simple as a stuck/burned valve.....

and maybe you could fix it for a 100 bucks or so.

just in case you didn't want to do lots of work.

only an idea <my 2 cents>
