i know that you can adapt the bolt pattern on rear axles, however can you do it on a front hub? eg change a dana 44 front to 5x4.5"

I'm not sure about that one. I think you'd be running into clearance problems with the smaller centers of the 5-4.5" wheels and spacers on the 44 hub center. I'm just thinking that the smaller bolt pattern of the 5-4.5" would be too close to the larger hub centers for adequate strength. You'd have to pull some measurements to see. I've never done it so I can't say for sure.

I might be way out to lunch here but didn't some 80's dodges come with a D44 with a small 5 bolt pattern?

Check http://www.geocities.com/tv_larsen/axle.html apparently these axles bearings suck ass though.

I know when they SAS Pathfinders and use Ford Dana 44's they just change out the spindles, knuckles, hubs and rotors to change it from the Ford 5 bolt to Chevy 6 bolt to match the rear axle.

Yep 74-79 Dodges had small bolt pattern on the D44, but because of the weak bearing setup its not worth the swap. Good source for rims though.

Have a '79 Ramcharger if you would like to come look at the setup.

Check the CJA site. I posted some links to technical write ups on the Dodge fulltime axles.
