Hey all, the 360 in the dodge i just bought is becoming a serious pain in the ass, the just had the timing chain swaped out becuse it was very lose and now I can't seem to get it to run right. I know it's been cammed, but I can't find out what cam it does have.

The timing likes to wander between 3before to 10after while idleing, also likes to stall at stops 1/2 of the time, and backfires a fair bit during acceleration. The wierd part is it didnt do any of this beffore the new timing chain was put in.

Any suggestions on possible causes?, it has new wires, cap and rotor.

My mechanic suggested checking the plugs and fuel filter. But if the plugs are bad should the new plugs I put in be gapped at the stock dodge specs?

If it has a "bigger cam in it" it is possible that the old timing chain may have been timed differently. (advanced or retarted) Now when he installed the "new chain" did he just set it up on TDC?? If he did this may be the cause of the rough running, espically back firing. Back firing is the tell tale sign the timing is out..

I just finished doing the timing in my 318 and had the same problems.I ended up changing the alt, voltage regulator, ignition module, ballist resistor and batt.I don't know which part was the actual problem because I changed everything at the same time.It starts and runs fine 95% of the time, the other 5% it still pops a little.
hope this helps.

tell the mechanic to plug off or disconnect the vacum advance next time he times it, and maybe if its an FI engine run a diagnostic check on it. A few sensors will do the to!!!

Well it was a sensor causeing mostt of the problems. Had a serious exhaust leak and the O2 sensor was giving me grief, once I replaced the gasket it runs much better now most of the time.
