Got one of these in my In-Laws 73 Winnie.

Is the Ignition module a standard part that I can get at PYP or should I look new.

How much $$$ for a new one.

This is the part that provides power to the coil right ???

Buy new.. I think an electronic ignition upgrade can be had for less than $100. Not sure what year Dodge brought in the electronics but it is a wise upgrade over the points..

OK, Apparently that wasn't the problem.

It starts fine but after about an hour or so it will just die and not start again until it cools down.

I'm thinking cracked distributor.

Any other ideas ???????

I can almost guarentee that its you ballast resistor. Try this: crank the engine over and after it starts hold the key in the crank psoition for a few seconds. Then release. If it stalls at the point that you released the key then its the ballast resistor. Its a small white porcelian block that on trucks is attached to the inside of the fenderwall usually close to the ign. module. It should have two wires coming off of it(possibly 4) for a temporary fix you can jumper theses wires together. Don't leave it too long as I have heard of people overheating the coil and melting out the distributor cap by doing this. I have also pm'd you.

Ok it's not the ballast resitor. If it was bad the motor would run with the key in the start postion but not in the run. What it sounds like is the magnetic pick up in the distributor is bad. If it runs good when the vehicle is first started but quits after everything is warm thats it. Whats happening is the magnet in the pickup of the distributor breaks down at hi heat. You can buy the pick up itself cheap replace it and your good to go.

I had an old Dodge van that would run for 10-20 min then quit. Turned out that when the ballast resistor got hot(they get really hot!), it would go to open. Wait a half hour or pack snow on it and you were good for another 10min. Made for a VERY long drive to town in a snow storm!

Turns out it was the Ballast Resistor this time.

Got a call last week. He was at the Petro on McLeod by Cheescake cafe to dunp his tankls and it broke down again.

Luck me I just went over to Partsource across the street, bought a 6 dollar ballast resistor and he was on his way again.

That being said its probably for sale now if anyone is interested.

He was really pissed at it this time.

A big belated thanks for all the advice.

Cheers.
