Howdy,

My neighbour has an '98 F-150. His brake lights are not working and because of this he cannot get his truck out of park. He can get around the brake-shift interlock, but do you guys know what possibly can be causing the lights to not work? A fuse, bad ground? If anyone can help out that would be cool. Be specific if you can, I usually only work on Yota's!

usually a broken wire at the brake switch or a bad switch causes that problem

this does not always work but try: turn the ignition key untill the dash lights come on. now turn it back to off slightly, the lights will go out; as soon as they do try shifting as you turn the key back to off slowly it may bypass the interlock and shift. it may take a few trys so don't give up right away. on some newer fords they realised this was a problem and added this "service interlock bypass". if not you can also go down to the brake pedal switch, using a testlight make sure you have power to one of the wires if you do, push the pedal and check the other wire while holding pedal down and see if the power flow is going thru- if not use a jumper wire and jump the two to get it out of park. start it inb neutral and go get a new switch. good luck
