The Alberta United Recreationists Society (http://www.aurs.org) is holding their 11th Annual Volunteer Days on Saturday September 13/03. The location is the Forest Reserve located about 50km NW of Cochrane on Hwy 40, otherwise known locally as the Ghost-Waiparous Region. Approximately 450 volunteers will sweat their way through a variety of trail maintenance, random campsite cleanup and event coordination.
This year will be much bigger than last year. As I am one of the event coordinators I am seeking operators who are willing to give their day up to help with radio communications. CARA and the AURS are working together on this club sanctioned event. I need about 10-12 people to accompany various key folks throughout the day. This is the perfect event to get involved with if you have ever wondered what off-road travel is really all about.
Details:
Location - Ghost Airstrip Group Campground, 50km NW of Cochrane (West from Cochrane (Hwy 22 and 1A), then North on Hwy 40, about 45 minutes from Cochrane in total)
Time - 9.30am to 5.30pm with FREE BBQ going to about 8pm
Date - Saturday September 13/03
Conditions - You'll be riding in someone else's vehicle unless you have 4WD, quad or dirt bike and aren't afraid to take it offroad. Some folks will be riding in a dumptruck, others will accompany the bulldozer operators. One operator will be needed as a "base" station and a car is fine for this. Bring your lunch and prepare for a day in the back country. This event goes rain/snow or shine. If you are going to drive your own vehicle off-road then bring a compass and/or a GPS -plus your knowledge of how to use it- to aid your navigation. Maps will be provided.
Communications - 2m, 5W handheld with magmount as a minimum. We will be using the Mockingbird Repeater, VE6GAD, for this event. If you have a mobile in a car, it should be transferrable to another vehicle like a dumptruck, so have a 12V cigarette lighter adaptor and magmount antenna on hand. If you have a setup for APRS, please let me know.
What you'll be doing - Spending the day on trail and keeping me apprised on where all the heavy equipment is. Providing a net of communications for emergencies. If the weather is good, you can work on your tan.
Accomodations - It's an hour and a half from Calgary, so you can easily do this as a daytrip. Free camping is available for Friday and Saturday evenings. Last grocery stop is Cochrane IGA. Again, Saturday evening has a FREE BBQ for all volunteers. There is usually a party of some sort back at camp, several of them actually.
What you'll get - My gratitude. A cold frosty one of your choice, on me. FREE BBQ Saturday night. Free Camping Friday and Saturday night. An opportunity to be part of "doing the right thing" for our backcountry resources.
