What would the normal operating Oil Pressure be for the little V6?
The last time I took the truck out a month or so back, after getting into the back country, the Dash Gauge showed no pressure until I was on the highway coming back and then it only went up to the bottom of the normal range. The further I went on the highway the louder the lifters banged. When I finally got home I'm sure the neighbors could hear the ranger from inside their houses.
This weekend I finally had some time and disconnected the sending unit and connected an Oil Pressure Gauge I got from AutoValue. I don't know if I like an Oil line right inside the cab but this style is more accurate, so what the heck.
When I started up the engine, there was no banging at all, although I can hear one lifter ticking now.
The gauge read 50 PSI and as the engine warmed it dropped to 24 PSI.
I left it running for about an hour and by this time it had dropped to 11 PSI.
It never seemed to go lower than this and at this reading the lifters weren't making any noise, except the one ticking. When I revved up the engine the pressure increased and when the engine returned to idle it was back at 11 PSI.
The only thing that I had done to the truck before the last offroad session was an Oil change the weekend before. I hadn't used the truck at all that week.
I'm thinking of changing the oil and filter again and then taking the truck for a run around town.
Any ideas on what could have gone wrong?
And why it seems to be ok now?
I've never heard of an engine fixing itself and I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Any help would be appreciated.
