I'm gunna branch out from my Chevy trucks and engines and such and make use of some spare parts I got sittin around in my shop.

I gotsa 351w and a 400m sittin in the middle of my shop.
So the way I figure it, I ain't never gunna use the 400m, and I don't wanna use the 351w the way it sits so I wanna build a 427 stroker.

Any of y'all ever done this?

Any tips for a guy that don't know a damn thing bout Fords cept that they keep rustin my yard. Makin my other rusty stuff look bad.

Although they do make the camaro on blocks look better.

With the windsor you can get stroker/rotating kits up to 427-434 cubes or so depending on overbore. The 351m / 400 use a head like a 2v cleveland, not really perfomance oriented. You can bolt 4 v cleveland heads on though and use spacer plates for the cleveland intake. My buddy runs a 408 putting out 600hp. You cannot interchage crankshafts between a windsor and a 351m / 400. There is also a kit that uses 351 cleveland heads on a windsor block. By the way this is how five out of the top six finishers in the engine master challenge where ford windsor motors with CHI aluminum cleveland heads.

Guy in Brooks, Would you be thinking of Frank Merkyl?

The Crank from the 400 will interchange between the 351w with a little machine work, the mains are the same. But there is a ridge at the front of the crank that has to be machined off in order for the timing gears to line up. Plus there is alot of die grinder work in the block on the 351w so the counterweights will clear.

I never knew that there were that many in the engine masters. I just had the notion that I want to build one. In my other post looking for a Ford Ranger, thats what I want to put it in. Four link it and race it.

I retired my S10 with a 383 stroker putting out over 600 hp. Time for a new track toy, And theres nuthin better that blowing away cars at the track with a truck.

Yes that would be him. Have you already talked to him. Some of the eagle/scat cranks have came down alot lately and may be had for the price of maching the 400 crank. Anyways he would the man to talk to if you are interested. That sounds like a cool project. I am currently in the middle of installing a 466 cube, 11.5 comp, aluminum headed Big block in a 79 F-150 lariet to do the same thing, surprise some camaro/vetts at the stop lights, shooting for around 525 hp and 550 ft/lbs torque.

Yeah, I have talked to Frank, he has been my "country Neighbor" for about 20 years. I always like to have as much input as possible when I am starting out with something new.

My boss says the place he sends his machine work to in Lethbridge will do my crank for 175 bucks cash if he sends it down. He has been dealing with a guy down there for 20 years or so, I'm going to try it out first, see how that goes. I'm cheap like you wouldn't believe, I gotsta build on a budget, I can't help it.

Frank said he would try the 400 crank out and see how well it fits. I guess there are clearance issues galore with some of the windsor bocks, he isn't sure which. But after you have made room for counter weights there is only a very small amount of cast left on the back left side of the block. Like 1/4 inch thickness, Sounds like a terrible oil leaking cracking disaster, but I guess I will see.

That truck your building sounds cool, How you gunna make it hook up?

Well for starters I put a spool in the 9". Next will be a set of Caltracs and I may take out one leaf not to lower it but too be less stiff. I am going to run either BFG or Mickey T's Street Drag Radials as they are suppossed to hook up on the street better than slicks. I don't want to spend big bucks on a custom four link. You got any ideas as on your previous truck you must have addressed these issues.

Back to your build would it be cheaper and less man hours to use the 400 block and crank and find a set of cast iron 4 v cleveland heads and spacer for a cleveland intake and go racing. My buddy just cemented his 400 block and shot peened the rods. Alos by the way there is a wealth of knowledge about this on a website called the 335 forum. Check it out. I just met Frank last spring and may get him to do some engine work for me in the future but Brooks is about 3 1/2 hours from me. Bought some alfalfa seed from him. When is he going to get his 604 engine back together ?

I used a narrowed 9" with a 4 link under my S10, I used some springs from a godknowswhat that my old man had laying in his shop. They were tall and soft, it hooked good but not great, It was and still is my only four link I have ever built for strip traction, it wasn't streatable at all, I could launch it at the track and it would squat and go but on the street it was a terrible scary wabbly mess. I just basically settled for the traction it had, I was in the process of building a easily detachable sway type bar for the four link but never got around to it.

Tha better half was in it once and only once, but then again so was everybody else that was in it.

400 has some issues, I was origionaly going to put it in a 70 torino cobra while I got the other engine rebuilt, but after instalation the head gasket leaked, so I replaced it, then I replaced it again, then I got the block mag fluxed, no cracks, so I decked it, still can't keep the cylinders sealed up. I have taken about 17 thou off thats the absolute max I can take it and still make shit fit.

Frank has been to busy helping his kid build his car I think. I know that he has been real busy, he is always coming into the shop but not for long, he has been doing more work for others than himself from what I understand.

But when he gets it built up again, I hope he throws that damn C6 out the window and goes for a power glide, C6 eats up so much power, but according to him, there aint no GM parts going into my Ford. LOL.
