I just recently aquired a 84 ford ranger (damn it, it was free!)
Anyways, it has a 4 speed manual trans, and when your in neutral with the clutch out it makes a horrible noise, anyone know why?? I think its a tranny bearing or something, am i right? It also clunks when you move in reverse, would it be part of the same problem?? I dont plan to fix it, cause i am doing a full drive train swap to 4x4 conversion, but i am just wondering how long you may figure i have till the damn thing blows up!!!! LOL

your clutch noise sounds like the release bearing but if it only makes noise with the clutch pedal up it shouldn't go anytime soon, as for the clunk id check the u-joints.

good luck with it

Suck it up boys!! Enjoy your jabbs while you can! I would sooner own a ford then a dodge(jeep).
Either way, this will be a nice little truck when i am done with it, so whatever!!

I happen to have a written off mid 80's ford bronco 2, I plan to use the drive train out of it. It ran good before it was hit. Has a V6 in it, 4L i believe. I am just gonna take everything , engine, trans, tcase, and diff's. I also would like to fab some sort of lift for it. Prob put blocks in the rear. Not to sure how to do the front yet tho. I just want maybe 3 inch's, so i can run 31's or 33's. It wont see mud, I just need something small, and good on gas to get me accross the city everyday. It dont run so great now, and i have the bronco parts, so i thought "why not".
Plus, the body is decent , other then needing a new drivers side front fender , a hood, and a front bumper. So when i paint it, it should look pretty damn sweet, i mean for a ford and all!!

sounds like the throw out bearing to me if the noise is constent when in neutral. If you put the pedal in like an inch does it go away? Check if so i would put money on the throw out bearing. It has done it my chev for along time but hasn't given ma any problems.

Daysie
It would the release bearing, and the noise could be the brakes or the diffy if it is that bad. But as for fabbing a lift just lower the spring perches on the frame.

hey daisy are you going to fix the 4spd trany?if you need any parts let me know.i have an 84 broncoII that had the same 4spd trany.i have since replaced it with a c5 auto.all the standard parts clutch, throw out bearing, clutch plate,reservoir,etc... are just collecting dust.if you want to check the parts i have out let me know.very cheap.the trany has broken internal parts but all the rest are still good.i was about to send all these parts i didn't need to the scrap yard.give me a shout if you're interested. 616-9154 any time.
